Choosing lumber for a raised vegetable bed comes down to a trade-off between lifespan, cost, and safety. The wood you pick will sit in damp soil for years, so rot resistance matters as much as price. For most U.S. gardeners, untreated cedar or redwood is the safest, most practical choice, though pressure-treated lumber is a reasonable option if you understand what you’re buying.
Why Cedar and Redwood Lead the Pack

- Choose lumber labeled for ground contact.
- Use only preservative systems approved for residential use.

Lumber Mistakes That Shorten a Bed’s Life
