Whether you’re fixing a bare patch or starting a new lawn, preparation decides whether your seed germinates or rots. Dirt that’s compacted, weedy, or poorly graded will choke out young grass before it has a chance. The working sequence below follows the same order extension services recommend, so you can check each step off as you go.
Clear the Site First
Grass seed needs bare soil contact, not competition. Remove existing vegetation, old grass, roots, rocks, sticks, and any other debris before you do anything else. Both Ohio State and Illinois Extension emphasize clearing the site completely, because leftover weeds and old grass steal water and nutrients from new seedlings.
For small patches, a sharp spade or garden fork handles the job. For larger areas, consider renting a sod cutter to strip the old growth cleanly. Either way, the goal is a surface where seed can actually touch soil.
Test the Soil Before Amending
Soil testing is the step most people skip, and it’s the one that causes the most failures. Illinois Extension and Utah State University Extension both list soil testing as the first move — not adding lime or fertilizer on a guess. A test tells you your pH and nutrient levels, so you only add what your dirt actually needs.
Extension offices and garden centers sell test kits, or you can send a sample to a lab. Once you have results, apply lime to raise pH, sulfur to lower it, or fertilizer to correct nutrient gaps. Over-applying any amendment wastes money and can harm the soil, so wait for the test before you buy bags.
If you’re starting fresh, add compost or topsoil based on those test results. Illinois Extension recommends amending to a depth of 6 to 8 inches, while Ohio State suggests 1 to 2 inches of compost rototilled into the top 4 to 6 inches. A thin ¼ to ½ inch topdressing can also be spread and watered in for a lighter touch.
Loosen, Grade, and Firm the Soil
Compacted soil blocks root growth and traps water. Loosen the top layer with a rotary tiller, garden fork, or hand rake depending on your lawn size. A tiller works the top six inches efficiently for larger areas, while hand tools suit small patches. Whatever you use, the goal is a friable, crumbly seedbed that lets seed be lightly raked in — Ohio State describes this aggregated surface as the ideal.
Grading matters more than most people realize. Illinois Extension recommends rough grading to a 1 to 2 percent slope away from buildings, so water drains instead of pooling against foundations. Fill low spots and knock down high ones before you move on.
If you over-tilled and the soil feels fluffy, firm it with a lawn roller or weighted drag. A loose, puffy surface creates poor seed-to-soil contact, which dries out seed and reduces germination. Light firming solves that problem in one pass.

Seed, Rake, and Water

After seeding, keep the seedbed consistently moist for several weeks.
