Installing garden fence edging requires marking the border, digging a narrow trench, setting the edging at the right height, anchoring it with stakes or clips, and backfilling tightly on both sides.
A crisp edge between lawn and garden bed transforms a yard from “fine” to “finished.” The process is straightforward for any material — plastic, metal, stone, or wood — and follows the same sequence of steps. The trick is getting the prep right before you break ground. Here is exactly how to install garden fence edging so it stays straight, level, and tidy for years.
Plan Your Layout and Gather Materials
Measure the total length of the border you want to edge. Divide that number by the length of a single edging piece or roll to figure out how many units you need — buy one extra to account for cuts or mistakes. Mark the line on the ground with string and stakes for straight runs, or a garden hose for curves. Spray paint works well for marking a clean line on grass or dirt. Clear all grass, rocks, weeds, and roots from the marked path before you dig; debris left in the trench will prevent the edging from seating flat.
Call 811 before digging if you are installing post-style fence edging that goes more than a few inches deep — underground utility lines can be anywhere. Wear gloves during the whole job, and add safety goggles if you are cutting metal edging to length.
Dig the Trench and Prepare the Base
Dig a trench along your marked line that is roughly 3 to 6 inches deep, depending on the height of your edging material. A good rule of thumb is to make the trench about half the height of the edging, or just deep enough that the top sits at the finished grade you want. Keep the trench only as wide as the material plus a couple of inches for backfill. For stone or heavy concrete edging, add a 2-inch layer of sand or gravel at the bottom of the trench, then compact it with a hand tamper — this prevents settling and rocking later.
Use a carpenter’s level on a straight board across the trench to check that the base is flat. Add or remove sand under low or high spots before you set the edging permanently.
Set, Connect, and Anchor the Edging
Place the edging sections into the trench, connecting modular pieces with the included clips or connectors. Align each section carefully before fastening — once staked, adjustments are harder. For plastic edging, drive each stake through the edging from the lower outside face at a slight angle, using a rubber mallet. Wood edging gets stakes driven on the outside of the lawn side, with boards nailed to them and the stake tops cut at a 45-degree angle to shed water.

Backfill and Compact Both Sides
Once the edging is fully placed and level, backfill the trench with the soil you removed. Pack it tightly on both sides of the edging — not just one side — using the handle end of a shovel or a hand tamper. Loose backfill is the most common reason edging shifts after rain or frost.
