How to Install a Straw Erosion Control Blanket — From Top to Bottom

Dig the top trench. At the top of the slope, dig a trench about 6 inches deep and 6 inches wide. The NRCS post-fire guide specifies at least 8 inches deep for burned-area treatments, but 6 inches works for most residential slopes. Position the trench so the blanket’s leading edge sits inside it.

Key in the top edge. Lay the leading edge of the blanket into the trench, fold it back over itself, and staple through both layers. Backfill the trench with soil and compact it firmly. This top anchor is what keeps water from running behind the blanket and peeling it off the slope.

Unroll downhill. Roll the blanket from the top of the slope downward, in the direction water flows. On slopes, always install up-and-down rather than across the contour. For drainage channels or waterways, unroll in the same direction as the water flow.

Overlap adjacent rolls. Overlap side-by-side blankets by 4 to 6 inches. For end-to-end seams where one roll ends and the next starts downslope, overlap by at least 12 inches — or 3 feet on steeper slopes and higher-flow sites. Staple every overlap.

Staple across the whole field. Staple every 12 inches along the top trench and seams, with additional staples every 3 to 5 feet down the sides and center. In sandy soil, use longer staples — the NRCS recommends 6-inch U-shaped legs at minimum with 0.09-inch diameter or heavier galvanized wire. For channels and high-flow sites, add check rows every 25 to 40 feet to stop water from lifting a long unbroken run.
