Step One: Check the Switch and the Sun

If it’s been off, simply turning it on and leaving the light in direct sun for a full day will recharge the drained battery.
Assuming the switch is on, step back and look at where the light is sitting. Solar panels need full, unobstructed sunlight from about 10 AM to 4 PM — at least six hours daily in the Northern Hemisphere. South-facing spots are best. Shade from a tree, a bush that grew over the summer, or even the north side of a house cuts charging dramatically. If the light has been in the same shady spot for months, moving it to a sunnier location is usually all it takes.

A dirty solar panel can block up to half the incoming light. Clean it with a soft microfiber cloth and plain warm water — no soap, no chemicals, which can leave a film that attracts more dust. Wipe in circles, then dry immediately to prevent water spots.

Most garden lights use standard AA rechargeable batteries, but check the compartment size before buying replacements. Turn the switch Off, remove the batteries, and let the unit sit with no power for about 30 seconds (this drains any residual charge).
