Garden lime is a calcium carbonate soil amendment used to raise pH in acidic soil, making nutrients more available for grass and lime-loving vegetables.

If your soil test came back with a low pH, garden lime is the standard fix. It’s ground limestone—calcium carbonate—that “sweetens” acidic ground by neutralizing excess acidity. Properly applied, it unlocks phosphorus, potassium, and calcium while improving soil structure and drainage. The catch: you can’t guess the need. Lime applied to neutral or alkaline soil does more harm than good, locking up nutrients instead of freeing them.

What Exactly Is In Garden Lime?

Garden lime’s active ingredient is calcium carbonate, a naturally occurring mineral ground from limestone. It’s sold under several names—agricultural lime, agricultural limestone, or dolomitic lime when it contains magnesium carbonate as well. Products come as a fine powder or as pelletized granules that are less dusty and easier to spread.

Garden lime is not the same as quicklime (calcium oxide) or hydrated/slaked lime. Those industrial-strength products are caustic, can damage soil organisms, and should never be used in lawns, vegetable gardens, or flower beds.

Why Do You Need Garden Lime?

Acidic soil—pH below 6.0—makes essential nutrients like calcium, phosphorus, and potassium less available to plant roots. Grass struggles, vegetable yields drop, and moss can outcompete turf. Garden lime fixes this by raising pH toward the 6.5–7.0 range where most plants thrive.

It also delivers two side benefits: improved soil structure and better decomposition of organic matter. For brassica growers, RHS guidance notes that liming can reduce clubroot disease risk in acidic soil. The key: work only from a soil test, not from a hunch.

How To Apply Garden Lime Correctly

A soil test tells you the current pH and the application rate. Rates vary significantly by soil texture, not just how acidic the ground is. Sandy soils need less lime than clay soils to achieve the same pH shift—the RHS provides specific kg per m² for each soil type. Spread the lime evenly over the surface, then work it into the top 3–6 inches of soil where possible.

On lawns, apply the measured amount and water it in thoroughly to move the lime down to the root zone. For amounts over 0.5 kg per m², RHS suggests digging half into the soil and sprinkling the rest on the surface. For amounts under that threshold, dig the entire dose in if practical. If digging isn’t possible, a surface application still works but acts more slowly.

Garden Lime Safety And Common Mistakes

Lime dust can irritate your eyes, skin, and lungs. Wear gloves, safety glasses, and a dust mask during application. Avoid applying before heavy rain, which can wash the lime away before it works into the soil.

The biggest mistake is liming without a test. Overliming pushes pH too high, reducing the availability of iron, manganese, and other micronutrients. If soil is already neutral or alkaline, adding lime will harm plant growth. A simple home soil test kit or county extension test costs next to nothing and saves a season of frustration.
