The question isn’t whether they need sun — it’s how much, and when a little shade actually helps. Here’s what US home gardeners need to know for outdoor beds, containers, and indoor setups.

How Many Hours of Sun Do Tomato Plants Need?

The short rule: six hours of direct, unfiltered sunlight is the minimum for any fruit production. Push that to eight hours or more, and you’ll see noticeably more tomatoes and healthier vines. This isn’t ambient brightness or dappled light passing through tree leaves. A site that looks bright to your eyes but only gets four hours of direct exposure will produce weak plants and thin harvests.

Outdoor Sunlight: Full Sun vs. Afternoon Shade in Hot Climates

For most of the US, the best outdoor placement is the spot that gets uninterrupted sun from late morning through late afternoon. South- or west-facing garden beds usually win. But if you’re gardening in the US South or other regions where summer afternoons regularly push past 95°F, the rules shift slightly.

Indoor Tomato Light: Hours and Intensity

Indoor tomatoes need longer photoperiods than outdoor plants because artificial light is less intense than the sun. Dropping below 12 hours indoors risks leggy growth, poor flowering, and dramatically reduced fruit set.
