Stake a tree only when it can’t stand upright alone, using soft ties placed low and loose, and remove the stakes within one growing season.
Most newly planted trees should not be staked at all. A tree that stands on its own after the nursery stake comes out will grow stronger without support, because gentle swaying builds trunk girth and root anchorage. Staking becomes necessary only when a tree is unstable, leans badly, or sits on a windy site where it could rock and tear new roots. When you do stake, think of it as a temporary cast—minimal support, removed as soon as the tree heals.
Do You Actually Need to Stake?
Skip the stakes unless your tree fails a simple test. Remove any temporary nursery stake, then gently push the trunk near the top. If the root ball stays put and the tree returns to vertical, it doesn’t need support. The University of Minnesota Extension recommends staking only when a tree cannot stand upright on its own or faces strong prevailing winds.
Bare-root trees often need temporary staking because their roots aren’t anchored yet. Container-grown trees usually don’t. If you’re unsure, err on the side of no stakes—the tree will develop a stronger trunk and wider root system without them.
How to Stake a Tree: Step by Step
Follow the Seattle Department of Transportation’s method, which covers the essentials clearly:
- Remove all nursery staking materials first. Those bundled twine and bamboo stakes were shipping aids, not permanent support.
- Drive stakes outside the root ball, not through it. Going through the ball slices roots that took months to grow. Place two parallel stakes just outside the ball, aligned with the prevailing wind direction. For most situations, two stakes beat one because they hold the trunk without a single high-pressure contact point.
- Drive stakes deep—about 18 inches into the ground. Stakes are commonly 5–6 feet long, so a 2-foot drive leaves plenty of height above grade. In sandy soil, go deeper.
- Find the tie height. Support the trunk with one hand and slide it up until the tree stays upright when you give it a gentle push. That point—usually about one-third up the trunk—is where the tie goes. The RHS specifies securing around 40–50 cm (16–20 inches) above ground for a single-stake setup.
- Attach broad, soft ties. Use webbing, nylon straps, bicycle inner tube, or commercial tree straps. Never use wire, rope, or any narrow material—it cuts into bark and can girdle the tree.
- Tie loosely. The tree should sway several inches in the wind. Tight staking prevents the movement that triggers trunk thickening, producing a weak tree that snaps when the stakes come off.
For the RHS single-stake method, position one stake at a 45-degree angle to the trunk, hammer it in at least 40 cm, and fasten the tie with a spacer so it doesn’t rub the bark.
How Long Should Stakes Stay On?
Remove the ties as soon as the tree can stand on its own—typically after one growing season. The University of Minnesota says ties should be on for no longer than a year, and most trees are self-supporting within 6–12 months.
Leaving stakes too long causes two problems. The trunk never develops the taper it needs for stability, and ties can girdle the bark as the tree thickens. Check the straps monthly for bark damage, loose knots, or constriction, and adjust them as needed.
In high-traffic areas, keep stake tops at least 3 feet above the ground so people don’t trip over the webbing. Once you remove the ties, you can leave the stakes in place as mechanical protection for another season, but the tree must support itself.

- Driving stakes through the root ball—damages the very roots you’re trying to protect.
- Using wire or thin rope—abrades bark and can girdle the tree within a single season.
- Tying too tightly or too high—prevents the movement that builds trunk strength.
- Leaving stakes on for years—creates a dependent tree that falls once support disappears.
- Never checking the ties—constriction happens gradually and silently.
