Whether you’re clearing space for a garden bed, prepping for new sod, or eliminating a patchy lawn, the method you choose determines how fast you can plant and how much labor you’ll invest. Manual sod cutting gives you instant results but demands serious effort; smothering improves the soil while it works but takes months; solarization bakes the grass out in hot weather; and herbicides offer a chemical shortcut with moderate waiting. Here’s exactly how each approach works and which one fits your project.
Removing Grass With Manual Excavation
Manual removal is the fastest way to clear small areas when you want to plant immediately.
Tilt your spade or sod cutter vertically, push down with foot pressure, and use the blade as a lever to lift the root mass. Remove all roots and debris by hand — leftover roots regrow into weeds. Rake the area smooth for planting, and you’re ready to go in a day or two.
Smothering Grass With Sheet Mulching
Smothering kills grass by blocking sunlight, turning the turf into compost that enriches the soil underneath. It’s the best option for large areas when you aren’t in a rush and want to avoid chemicals.
Mow the grass as low as possible, then drench the area with water. Lay 2–3 layers of unwaxed cardboard (or 10–12 layers of newspaper, black ink preferred) over the grass, overlapping edges by a few inches so no light penetrates. Soak the paper until it’s saturated, then add a minimum of 3–4 inches of compost, bark mulch, or grass clippings on top. Water the mulch weekly to keep the cardboard damp — dry cardboard warps and lets light through.
This method works well across most US regions and improves soil structure as the material breaks down. The main pitfall is skimping on overlap — even a sliver of exposed grass will survive and push through.
Solarization With Clear Plastic
It works best in hot climates during late spring or summer when daily temperatures stay high.
Mow low and water the area to saturation — moist soil conducts heat far better than dry soil. Remove rocks and debris that could puncture the plastic, then cover the space with clear polyethylene sheeting at least 6mm thick. Secure every edge with stakes, rocks, or by burying the plastic in soil so it’s airtight and no heat escapes.
Hotter weather dials the timeline toward four weeks; cooler conditions need the full eight. When the grass is dead and brittle, remove the plastic and rake the debris. Solarization also kills soilborne pathogens and weed seeds, which makes it a good choice for garden beds that will hold vegetables or flowers.
Chemical Removal With Non-Selective Herbicides
This route works well for stubborn perennial weeds or when you need faster results than smothering and solarization allow.
Mow the grass low, then apply the herbicide following the product label’s exact mixing ratios — not more, because overdosing doesn’t speed up results. After two weeks, rake up the debris and your area is ready for new planting.
Herbicides are non-selective, so protect nearby plants with cardboard or plastic sheeting during application.
