The trick is getting the container, the soil, and the plant depth right the first time — because once you fill it, that 20-gallon tub weighs over 200 pounds and isn’t moving. Choosing The Right Container And Location
The container must be non-porous, waterproof, and have zero drainage holes. A half whiskey barrel (lined if wood), a ceramic pot, a farm trough, or an old tub all work — avoid containers that previously held wine or whiskey, as bacteria can linger in the wood. Dark interiors help control algae and make the water look deeper than it is.
Size matters for both plant health and weight. The container should hold 15–35 gallons and be at least 10 inches deep. For a 16-inch diameter container, four to five plants is enough. Cover 50–60% of the water surface with foliage — lily pads or floating plants like water hyacinth — to starve algae. After arranging the plants, fill the container gently with rainwater or tap water that has sat out for 24–48 hours to evaporate chlorine.
