Improving a grass lawn comes down to six core practices: mowing at the right height, watering deeply but infrequently, testing and amending soil, aerating compacted ground, topdressing with compost, and overseeding thin areas in the proper season.
Most thin, patchy, or weedy lawns aren’t failing because of bad luck. They are failing because one or more of these fundamentals is off. The fix is systematic: diagnose the soil before you add anything, fix compaction before you seed, and mow tall enough that the grass can shade its own roots. Start With a Soil Test (Not a Fertilizer Guess)
Every bag of fertilizer or lime you buy should be chosen based on a lab soil test from within the last three years. Guessing wastes money and can harm the lawn — too much nitrogen pushes weak growth, and wrong pH locks nutrients out of reach.
