Lawn and garden products display three numbers on the bag, always in the same order: nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). When that last figure tops the others, you are holding a potassium-rich fertilizer. Products like 0-0-60, 0-0-50, and 0-0-22 are common examples. This type of fertilizer is chosen when soil tests show the ground cannot supply enough potassium for the crop, or when a specific plant like tomatoes or potatoes demands extra K for fruit quality and disease resistance.

Why Potassium Matters for Plants

Potassium is one of the three primary macronutrients every plant needs in large amounts. While nitrogen drives leafy growth and phosphorus supports root and flower development, potassium regulates water movement, enzyme activation, and the transport of sugars. The Main Types of Potassium Fertilizer

Five commercial products account for nearly all potassium fertilization. Each offers a different balance of cost, companion nutrients, and crop suitability.

  • Potassium chloride (KCl, muriate of potash or MOP) — The most common and cheapest source, typically sold as 0-0-60. The University of Nebraska–Lincoln identifies it as the standard potassium product. Best for broad-acre and most lawn uses, but the chloride content can damage sensitive crops.
  • Potassium sulfate (K₂SO₄, sulfate of potash or SOP) — Sold as 0-0-50 plus 18% sulfur. UNL recommends it when chloride is undesirable, especially for tobacco, potatoes, grapes, and citrus. Also valuable for horticultural crops where quality matters most.
  • Potassium magnesium sulfate (Sul-Po-Mag) — Labeled 0-0-22 with 22% sulfur. Supplies potassium, magnesium, and sulfur in one granule, useful when a soil test shows shortages of all three.
  • Potassium nitrate (KNO₃) — Delivers both potassium and nitrogen in a highly soluble form, popular in fertigation and hydroponics.
  • Monopotassium phosphate (MKP) — A concentrated source of potassium and phosphorus, common in soluble fertilizers for high-value crops.

Organic options like wood ash, greensand, kelp, and compost contain potassium, but their nutrient content varies widely and they lack the standardized ratios of commercial products. They work as supplements, not reliable replacements.

How to Choose and Apply the Right Source

Matching the fertilizer to the crop’s sensitivity matters more than picking the highest K number. For lawns and most field crops, potassium chloride delivers the nutrient at the lowest cost. Switch to potassium sulfate when growing chloride-sensitive plants such as tobacco, potatoes, grapes, or citrus, or when the soil also needs sulfur. Choose Sul-Po-Mag when magnesium and sulfur are deficient alongside potassium.

Always read the N-P-K label before buying. Potash reporting traditionally uses a K₂O-equivalent basis, so compare products using that standard figure rather than raw potassium percentages. Application methods include broadcasting granular product before sowing, topdressing established plants, applying foliar sprays, or injecting through fertigation systems. Follow the product’s own rate guidance and local agronomic advice.
