Can You Use Garden Soil in a Raised Bed (And Vice Versa)?
The short answer is that garden soil in a raised bed will compact over the season, reducing root space and creating waterlogged pockets that damage crops. Raised bed soil used in-ground will drain too fast and won’t hold enough moisture to support deep rooting. Neither swap works well for long. The one exception: if you are building a very shallow in-ground bed and mixing it with native soil, garden soil is appropriate. For any contained bed that sits above ground level, raised bed soil is the only reliable choice.

How To Fill A Raised Bed With The Right Blend
