The goal is drainage and airflow, not nutrition. Succulents store water in their leaves and stems, so their roots never want to sit in soggy soil. A mix that stays wet invites rot, while a gritty blend lets oxygen reach the roots and lets excess water escape quickly.
The finished texture should be loose and crumbly. Squeeze a slightly damp handful: it should clump briefly, then fall apart the moment you let go. If it stays in a muddy ball, it will drown your plant.
Simple Succulent Soil Recipes That Work
Gardeners rarely buy a single-purpose product; they mix their own from two or three ingredients. Coarse sand, perlite, and pumice are the standard mineral amendments, and the basic formula is roughly equal parts potting soil and drainage material.
- 2:1:1 — 2 parts potting soil, 1 part coarse sand, 1 part perlite or pumice.

- 40/30/30 — 40% potting soil, 30% coarse sand, 30% perlite or pumice.

Measure by volume, not weight, so the ratio stays consistent. Start with the potting soil and break up any clumps, then add the sand or grit, and finish with perlite or pumice on top. Mix until the texture is uniform and every handful looks the same.
Choosing the Right Ingredients
Coarse sand is non-negotiable. Fine beach or play sand compacts into a dense layer that blocks airflow, which defeats the whole purpose. Pumice and perlite both add the porosity that keeps the mix open; either works, and many gardeners use a combination. Crushed granite or lava rock also serve as grit in a pinch.
Keep organic matter minimal. Potting soil, coco coir, and compost hold moisture, so they belong in the mix only as the smaller fraction. Too much organic material turns a fast-draining blend into a sponge.
Adjusting the Mix for Your Climate and Pot
There is no single universal succulent soil because your environment changes the math. In humid climates or in glazed or plastic pots, which hold moisture longer, tip the ratio toward more mineral material. In dry conditions or in unglazed terracotta, which wicks water away, the standard 2:1:1 mix works fine. Desert succulents and cacti generally want a leaner, more mineral-heavy blend than moisture-tolerant types.
A drainage hole in the pot is non-negotiable no matter what mix you use. Even the best soil can’t save a plant sitting in standing water.
