Standing water after a rain is one of the surest signs your garden soil has a drainage problem. Before you dig or spend money on amendments, figure out what you’re actually dealing with. From there, the fix is usually a combination of organic matter, soil loosening, and sometimes grade correction or subsurface drainage.

Test Your Soil Drainage First

Dig a hole about 12 inches deep and wide enough to fill with water. Fill it, let it drain completely, then refill and time how fast the water level drops.

If your soil drains slowly, the next step is figuring out why. Push a garden fork or screwdriver into the ground. Hard resistance suggests compaction. Sticky, dense soil that clumps into a hard ball points to heavy clay. Water running toward the area from uphill means you may have a grading problem that no amendment will fix.

Skip the sand. Iowa State explicitly recommends organic matter, not sand, to improve drainage in poorly drained soils. Mixing sand into clay without a full soil plan often worsens compaction rather than fixing it, because the two materials can combine into something closer to concrete.

Use finished compost or well-rotted manure only. Raw, undecomposed material can tie up nitrogen and is less stable in the soil.

Break Up Compaction and Fix the Slope

Compacted soil blocks water before it ever reaches the root zone. A garden fork, spade, or tillage can break up hardpans and impermeable layers. Thicker hardpan may require deep ripping. Never work wet soil — walking, digging, or tilling saturated ground increases compaction and makes drainage worse.

Check the lay of the land too. If the ground slopes toward your garden or the house, regrade the surface so water flows away and toward an outlet, swale, or drain. Site slope can cause standing water even when the soil itself is fine.

Persistent Wet Spots and Long-Term Fixes

For areas that stay soggy no matter what you add, subsurface drainage moves water out physically. Both require a proper outlet — without one, they just move the problem around.

Raised beds are the most reliable workaround for poorly draining native soil. Cover crops improve soil structure over time and add organic matter to annual beds.
