Getting granular fertilizer down correctly matters more than the brand you buy. Skip the steps and you get striped grass, burned spots, or fertilizer washing into the street. The good news is the process is simple once you know the order: measure, pick the right spreader, calibrate, spread, and water. Here’s the sequence that works, whether you’re feeding a whole lawn or a few garden beds.
Measure the Area and Read the Label First
The single biggest mistake people make is guessing the size of their lawn. You cannot apply the right amount of fertilizer unless you know the square footage. Walk the property and measure the length and width of each turf section, then multiply to get square feet. For irregular shapes, break them into rectangles and add them up. The bag’s label tells you how many pounds to apply per 1,000 square feet—typically around 3 pounds, but the exact number on your bag wins.
The label is the controlling instruction. It sets the rate, the timing, and any restrictions for your specific grass type. A generic rate from a neighbor or an old article could burn your lawn or underfeed it. Take the area you measured, divide by 1,000, and multiply by the label’s rate to get the total pounds you need. That math takes thirty seconds and prevents both waste and damage.
Choose the Right Spreader for the Job
The spreader type changes how you walk and how you overlap passes. For lawns and larger open areas, a mechanical spreader is the practical choice. A drop spreader releases granules straight down between the wheels, so you need to overlap your wheel tracks a bit to avoid skipped strips. For smaller areas and garden beds, a hand-held spreader or hand broadcasting works fine.
Regardless of the spreader, the same principles apply. Use a product with the proper SGN (a measure of granule size) and a homogeneous blend so the granules stay evenly mixed. Walk at a steady pace in straight lines, and do a perimeter pass first, then parallel passes, then a second set of passes at a 90-degree angle to the first. That cross-pattern is the difference between even green and patchy stripes.
If your spreader has never been calibrated, do it now. Place a tarp on the driveway, run a known distance with the hopper half full, and weigh what came out. Adjust the setting until the output matches the label’s rate. A few minutes of calibration saves you from a full season of stripes.
Spread, Sweep, and Water It In
Apply when the grass leaves are dry. Wet foliage makes granules stick to the blades, and concentrated fertilizer sitting on leaves causes burned spots. Mowing a day before application is smart because shorter grass lets granules reach the soil more easily, but watering is a step you do after, not before.
As you spread, stay off hard surfaces entirely. Sidewalks, patios, and driveways should get no fertilizer at all, so close the hopper before you cross them. If granules do land on pavement, sweep them back onto the turf immediately.
Water right after you finish spreading. This moves the granules off the foliage and into the soil where roots can use them, and it prevents the burn risk that comes from granules sitting on leaves.
For garden beds and individual plants, the technique shifts. Vegetable rows get placement beside the plants or incorporation into the top few inches of soil. Individual plants get fertilizer several inches from the base—never against the stem or root ball, since direct contact burns. Keep granules away from plant stems and tree trunks entirely.
Avoid These Common Mistakes
Most lawn damage from fertilizing comes down to three predictable errors. Applying right before heavy rain sends the nutrients into the nearest waterway instead of your soil; check the forecast and skip application if rain is coming within a day or two. Overapplying because the spreader is miscalibrated produces that classic striped look and can burn the grass. And skipping the watering step leaves granules sitting on dry foliage where they cause burn patches.
