If water enters the ground within 10 feet of the house, route it away at the surface or through a pipe—never leave it to soak directly against the foundation. Three Mistakes That Will Ruin a Rock Drainage Bed
Most drainage failures trace to one of three things. Skipping landscape fabric lets soil fill rock gaps within a year or two, turning the bed into a water-holding sponge. Using wrong stone size—anything much smaller than ½ inch compacts, anything larger than 1½ inches creates unstable gaps for soil to wash in.
