Rosemary needs little to no fertilizer; a single light feeding in early spring with a balanced, low-nitrogen formula is usually all it takes.
Rosemary is not a hungry plant. It thrives in lean, well-drained soil and, in most gardens, the biggest mistake people make is feeding it too much. Overfertilized rosemary produces lots of soft, leafy growth but loses the concentrated aroma that makes it worth growing. Before you reach for fertilizer, check whether the plant actually needs it. If growth is slow, pale, or stunted, a single light application in early spring is the right call. If it looks healthy, skip feeding entirely.
What Type of Fertilizer Does Rosemary Need?
Rosemary responds best to balanced or slightly low-nitrogen fertilizers. A standard 10-10-10 or 12-12-12 granular formula works fine for most gardens. A 5-10-5 mix, which is lower in nitrogen, is also a solid choice and supports better flavor development. Organic options like compost, bone meal, fish emulsion, or seaweed extract are excellent alternatives and reduce the risk of salt buildup in the soil.
The hard rule is to keep nitrogen in check. Too much nitrogen pushes fast, soft growth that dilutes the essential oils responsible for rosemary’s flavor and fragrance. If your soil is already rich, skip fertilizer altogether.
When and How Often to Fertilize
For in-ground rosemary, once per year is enough. Apply a light feeding in early spring, just before or as new growth begins. That single application carries the plant through the entire growing season. Do not fertilize in late fall or winter, when the plant is dormant and new growth would be vulnerable to frost damage.
Container-grown rosemary loses nutrients faster because watering flushes them out. Potted plants may need some supplemental feeding every 4 to 6 weeks during active spring and summer growth, but keep each feeding light. If the plant looks good, skip a round.
How to Apply Fertilizer
The correct application technique matters as much as the product. Water the soil first to protect the roots, then apply fertilizer to the damp soil at the base of the plant. Never let it touch the stem or foliage, or it can cause chemical burn. Follow these steps for each method:
- Granular fertilizer: Sprinkle a thin, even layer around the root zone, then water it in well to carry nutrients to the roots.
- Liquid fertilizer: Dilute to half or quarter strength. Apply to the soil only, not as a spray on the leaves.
- Compost top-dressing: Add a thin layer of well-aged compost around the base every 1 to 1.5 years. That is usually all the fertilizer an established plant needs.
If you use a liquid feed, the diluted mix is enough. The plant’s roots will take up what they need without the risk of overloading the soil with salts.
Container vs. In-Ground: Does It Change the Rules?
The same principles apply to both, but the frequency differs. Established rosemary in garden soil often needs nothing more than spring compost if the soil is decent. Potted rosemary has a limited root zone and gets watered more often, so nutrients flush out faster. That does not mean you should feed it every time you water. A light monthly feeding during active growth is plenty. If growth stays steady and the foliage is a deep green, hold off.

The common thread is restraint. Rosemary evolved in dry, rocky Mediterranean hillsides on very lean soil. Treating it like a heavy feeder like tomatoes or roses is the fastest way to lose the flavor that makes it worth growing.
