The Biology Behind Composting

- Oxygen. Turning the pile regularly keeps oxygen flowing to aerobic microbes. For most plastic bins, once a month is usually enough; if you want faster results, aim for every three to four days (UConn, NRDC).
- Small particle size. Chop or shred materials to about 3 to 4 inches—or ideally no thicker than a finger—before adding them (NRDC, UConn). Smaller pieces have more surface area for microbes to work on.
How to Set Up and Maintain a Compost Bin
Setting up a bin correctly from the start prevents most common problems. Begin by placing the bin on level, well-drained ground in a convenient spot—maximum sunlight exposure helps, and you want easy access year-round (UConn). Start with a coarse layer of twigs, mulch, or potting mix to improve drainage at the bottom, then alternate layers of browns and greens, watering lightly as you go (NRDC, UConn). Common Composting Mistakes—and How to Fix Them
Even experienced composters hit snags. Here are the most frequent issues and what to do about them (NRDC, UConn).
- Too many greens, not enough browns. This causes a wet, smelly pile. Add more dried leaves, shredded cardboard, or wood shavings and turn thoroughly.
- Too wet or too dry. A wet pile needs more dry browns and more turning to aerate. A dry pile just needs water—add it while turning so it distributes evenly.
- Large pieces. Oversized branches or whole fruits break down very slowly. Chop or shred everything smaller before adding it.
- Not enough turning. Without oxygen, aerobic microbes die off and anaerobic bacteria take over, creating bad smells. Turn the pile more frequently.
- Poor placement. A bin on a slope or in poorly drained ground lets water pool and makes turning difficult. Move it to flat, well-drained ground (UConn).
