Setting up a PVC watering system is a straightforward weekend project that can save hours of hand-watering. Instead of dragging a hose every evening, you build a permanent network of pipe that delivers water exactly where plants need it. The two most popular builds are a hole-drilled sprinkler line that sprays water along the bed and a manifold that feeds soaker hoses or drip tubing. Both work with basic PVC parts and a few tools, and you can have the whole thing running for well under $100.

Planning Your PVC Garden Watering Layout
The success of a PVC irrigation system begins with a diagram of your garden beds, the location of your outdoor faucet, and plant spacing. Before buying pipe or fittings, sketch the pipe path. Measure each bed and note where elbows or tees are needed to navigate corners or split the line. Skipping this step often leads to pipe that is too short or fittings that don’t align with the hose bib.
You have two main layout choices:
- Above-ground sprinkler line: A single run of pipe with small drilled holes that spray water onto the soil. Best for rows of vegetables or flowers where water soaks down evenly.
- Manifold and drip system: A short pipe assembly that splits the main water line into several smaller lines running soaker hoses or drip tubing. Better for raised beds, mixed plant sizes, and areas where you want to avoid wetting leaves.
Building the PVC Sprinkler Line
A hole-drilled sprinkler line is the simplest PVC irrigation build: cut the pipe, glue fittings, and drill evenly spaced holes for water to spray onto soil. This system is fast and costs little—one documented build was completed for under $70.
What You Will Need
- 3/4-inch Schedule 40 PVC pipe (length depends on bed size)
- PVC elbows, tees, couplings, and a threaded cap as needed
- One threaded hose adapter (connects pipe to your garden hose)
- PVC cement
- Hacksaw or PVC cutter
- Drill with a small bit (1/16 inch or 3/32 inch are good starting sizes)
- Teflon tape for threaded connections
Step-by-Step Assembly
- Cut the pipe to length. A hacksaw works; a PVC cutter gives a cleaner edge. Deburr cut ends with sandpaper or a utility knife.
- Dry-fit every joint first. Lay out pipe, elbows, tees, and hose adapter without glue to confirm fit. Mark fittings with a pencil.
- Glue the permanent joints. Apply PVC cement to both the inside of the fitting and the outside of the pipe end, push together with a slight twist, and hold for 10 seconds. Let set for at least 15 minutes before moving.
- Install the hose adapter. Use Teflon tape on the threads before screwing it into the fitting at the water-source end. Leave hand-tight for slight rotation to align with the hose.
- Drill the spray holes. Once glue is fully cured, mark hole locations 8 to 12 inches apart along the pipe. Start with a 1/16-inch or 3/32-inch bit. Drill holes on the underside to spray downward.
- Test for leaks and pressure balance. Connect the hose, turn water on slowly, and check every joint for drips. If the far end is dry, add a valve near the water source to increase pressure or use a smaller hole size.
Point holes downward to hit soil directly, reducing evaporation. If mounting on stakes, position pipe 2 to 4 inches above soil so spray reaches roots without wasting water on pathways.
Building a PVC Manifold for Drip Irrigation
For beds with mixed plant sizes or where you want to avoid wetting foliage, a PVC manifold that splits water into several soaker hoses or drip lines is the better choice. This design uses a short assembly of pipe and fittings for even water distribution and can be buried or hidden under mulch.
A common build for a 3-foot-wide raised bed uses three 10-inch pieces, one 4-inch piece, and eight 2-1/2-inch pieces of PVC, all connected with tees and elbows. The output ports attach to soaker hoses or drip tubing running along each row. Follow the same cutting, dry-fitting, gluing, and hose-adapter steps as the sprinkler line. A key difference: drill no spray holes in the manifold—water flows into the attached tubing and seeps out slowly.
Before gluing the final cap on the return end, flush the system with water to clear PVC dust or debris that could clog emitters. Then cap the end and check for leaks at every fitting.
Adjusting Water Pressure and Avoiding Common Problems
Uneven water pressure is the most common issue with DIY PVC irrigation—plants near the water source get too much water while those at the far end stay dry. Install a ball valve at the water source to throttle flow and balance the system.
If spray from drilled holes is uneven, try these adjustments:
- Use a smaller drill bit (1/16 inch instead of 3/32 inch) to reduce flow per hole and increase pressure down the line.
- Space holes farther apart (12 inches instead of 8 inches) on longer runs to keep last holes active.
- Install a pressure regulator at the water-source entry if household water pressure exceeds 50 PSI.
